I haven’t seen in a long while a night sky as bright as the one that blanketed Wendell Friday night. Wendell Police Department and seven other law enforcement agencies executed a checkpoint at Wendell Blvd. and Rolesville Road, the area known as Martin Center. I was invited to attend and observe the checkpoint on behalf of the Law Enforcement and Recreation Committee, and having only experienced checkpoints behind the wheel of a car, I jumped at the chance to experience one from the sidelines. I have such admiration and respect for law enforcement. I think it takes a special person to put on a uniform every day, to leave home even at the risk of not returning, and to put the lives of others above all else. Standing out at that checkpoint Friday night reiterated to me how important that service and sacrifice are and just how thankful I am for those who do it.
There were a total of 56 charges as a result of Friday’s checkpoint. Three of those were DWIs. There were 32 officers working through the night. MADD volunteers provided food, water and sodas. DOT had workers on-site to make sure lighting was in place and functioning properly. During the short two hours I was out there, I was amazed at how safely and calmly officers maneuvered through all the commotion; cones everywhere, lights flashing, constant vehicle traffic and movement, constant noise, nonstop radio communication, questions from civilians… I was easily overwhelmed by it all while those guys never flinched. In one instance, our Wendell officers reacted immediately to an infant exhibiting medical complications, and EMS was dispatched and arrived on-scene within minutes.
Having observed this checkpoint, what went into it and the success that came from it, I can sleep a little easier knowing law enforcement is out there working to keep us safe. If I should ever let my attention slip for a second and I end up on the receiving end of a speeding ticket or some other traffic citation, I’ll remind myself of the checkpoint and the lives that may have been saved as a result… and I’ll continue to sleep easier at night knowing someone’s out there watching out for us.
